Product Description

Introduction
        L. plantarum is an appreciated functional microorganism due to both its recognized potential health benefits (including survivability in GI tract, adhesion ability, antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial activity, and modulation of the intestinal microbiota) and its ability to improve nutritional and sensory quality of certain foods, and its capacity to extend the shelf-life of fermented foods. These characteristics have made L. plantarum widely utilised as a probiotic culture in a broad variety of foodstuffs, some of its strains being promising cultures in the food industry in terms of enhancing novel and functional products.
Nonetheless, despite the recognized functional properties of different L. plantarum strains, there are currently many tasks to understand the role that this microorganism plays in the in the host health. Thus, further investigations are needed to characterize the molecular mechanisms by which L. plantarum exerts its probiotic effects. In this field, omics approaches are gaining importance because they enhance the understanding of the mechanisms behind the functional and probiotic properties of certain beneficial strains such as L. plantarum. Specifically, the use of metagenomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics allow the study of biological metabolites, the knowledge of gene expression, and the analysis of the complete set of proteins, respectively. These techniques have supported to better understand the mechanisms responsible for some functional properties of L. plantarum such as the mechanisms of adhesion to gastrointestinal tract, its ability to form biofilms, its antimicrobial and antifungal power, and its resistance to certain harsh conditions.

Analyses of microbiome composition in pre- and post-treatment fecal samples by 16S rRNA sequencing: (A) The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed no difference in composition between the pre- and post-treatment fecal samples at the phylum level (P=0.479, ANOSIM). (B) The PCA analysis revealed no difference in composition between the pre- and post-treatment fecal samples at the genus level (P=0.841, ANOSIM). (C) The relative abundance of microbial phyla between the pre- and post-treatment samples was indistinguishable (P=0.479, ANOSIM analysis). (D) The relative abundance of microbial genera between the pre- and post-treatment samples was indistinguishable (P=0.841, ANOSIM).
Effective on Dogs& Cats to Better Pets a Probiotics Lp3aAnalyses of microbiome composition differences in major genera and species between the pre- and post-treatment fecal samples by the Wilcoxon rank-sum test: (A) bar plots demonstrating no significant changes in major genera abundance between the pre- and post-treatment (red and blue, respectively) fecal samples (all P>0.05, Wilcoxon rank-sum test); (B) bar plots demonstrating no significant difference in abundance of major species between the pre- and post-treatment fecal samples (all P>0.05, Wilcoxon rank-sum test).
Effective on Dogs& Cats to Better Pets a Probiotics Lp3aClusters of Orthologous Group (COG) and Gene Ontology (GO) classifications of functional proteins in the genome of
L. plantarum L p3a: (A) protein-coding genes were clustered into 20 COG functional categories, including general function prediction only (484 unigenes), function unknown (352 unigenes), carbohydrate transport and metabolism (235 unigenes), amino acid transport (199 unigenes), and metabolism and transcription (198 unigenes); (B) protein-coding genes were clustered into 31 major GO subclasses, including molecular function (10 unigenes), biological process (11 unigenes), and cellular component (10 unigenes).

A pet suffering from digestive problems is not only unhappy, uncomfortable, and potentially unhealthy, but is also a source of worry for pet owners.  To ensure pet health, many pet owners are making pet probiotics supplements part of their pet care routine.

The growth for the pet probiotics category has been driven by an increased awareness and interest in functional pet foods and supplements. The pet probiotics market is experiencing growth of 7% per year and estimated to be valued at $7 billion by the year 2030. More and more consumers are willing make greater investments in their pets, as many view their pet as a family member.

Pet probiotics can address many conditions:

  •
General Health: To promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria for optimum digestion, nutrient absorption, metabolic balance for weight management, and general well being.
  •
Diarrhea and Constipation: Treating and preventing episodes of diarrhea and constipation, including restoring the natural balance of the gut after disturbances such as antibiotic treatments.
  •
Immune System Boost: Promoting a healthy gut biome to help support and enhance the immune system's responses.
  •
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Pets can suffer from IBD, a condition where the intestines become inflamed: probiotics may help manage and mitigate the symptoms.
  •
Compete with Harmful Bacteria: Reduce the number of harmful bacteria by competing for space and resources in the gut.

A probiotic that's beneficial for humans might not provide the same benefits for pets: for example, certain Lacticaseibacillus or Bifidobacterium strains might be common in both human and pet probiotics, but the specific subspecies or strains may differ, as benefits are strain specific. Other differences may be formulations, dosages, and testing.

Manufacturers and consumers should concern themselves with ensuring that what's in the product matches what's on the label.

With the prices that probiotics command, there can be opportunists selling pet probiotics that are not effective and can even be harmful. As with human probiotics, authentication testing can validate what the product contains.

Manufacturers of probiotic products have a responsibility to ensure and maintain the viable cell count of their products, not only to deliver the promised health benefits but also to uphold regulatory, ethical, and economic standards. The verification of viable cells of the specific strain ensures that the product will deliver the intended health benefits. Furthermore, the importance of strain identity testing cannot be overstated.

At Purity-IQ, our extensive library allows us to conduct identity tests for 80 different strains, ensuring that the right strain is present in the product. Strain level v-PCR testing provides companies the ability to enumerate probiotics at strain level to monitor stability of each strain, observe quantities and potential overages, and assess the impact of new protectants or additives on single or multi-strain blends.
