Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) is a protein that plays a role in many physiological processes, including glucose metabolism, immune regulation, and the clearance of hormones that regulate glucose homeostasis: 
Function
DPP-4 is a serine protease that cleaves peptides in the circulation, including glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). 
Expression
DPP-4 is expressed in many tissues, including the lungs, intestines, kidneys, livers, brains, pancreases, and immune cells. 
Role in diabetes
DPP-4 inhibitors are oral anti-diabetic drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus by improving glycemia and post-prandial lipid excursions. 
Role in the immune system
DPP-4 regulates the functions of immune cells, including CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells, B cells, NK cells, dendritic cells, and macrophages. 
Role in virus
DPP-4 is a functional receptor for Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and protein modeling suggests that it may play a similar role with it.
